Jefferson County's Trash: Waste Management Emails

Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Lloyd Franklin filed an “Emergency Petition for Ex-Parte Declaratory Injunctive Relief” Tuesday against County Judge Gerald Robinson, Lakeshore Recycling Services (LRS) and Brian Lockhart (Area Gen Manager) LRS about the county’s sanitation pickup.

The emergency petition comes as Jefferson County plans to switch from using Waste Management to Lakeshore Recycling Systems (“LRS”). LRS started delivering new trash carts this week to county residents. The county’s contract with LRS starts Jan. 2.

Waste Management sent a letter last week to Robinson stating:

“WM's current Solid Waste Contract with the County expires on December 31, 2024, and it was WMS understanding that the County was going to request that WM agree to an extension of this contract for a few months to allow the County time to issue and: administer formal. competitive bidding process for these services in the new year.”

Jefferson County, in fact, owes more than half of a million dollars to Waste Management, according to emails obtained by the Reckoning.
